Chapter 15

T he woman before me would normally be a sight for sore eyes, but appearing in the specific moment that she had, I was understandably less happy to see her. Not only that, the hairs on the back of my neck stood on end at her appearance because it potentially meant the child-slaving mercenary working for the so-called King Killian Carver, Mister Artemourn Knives, might not be far behind.

I glared at her as Alluria scrambled to join me in standing. Reaching down, I helped the kitsune to her feet. She brushed off her dress and tossed a bitter scowl at the coitus interruptor.

“Greetings, Eli. Alluria, right?” Kay asked the vulpine beauty. She bowed her head slightly in a show of respect that calmed at least one or two of my nerves.

I grimaced at her, but returned a similar show of cordiality. “Kay,” I grunted. “I sure hope you’re here with great news.”

“Well—no,” she murmured. “I’m here with bad news, and a fresh burden, unfortunately. But I believe you’re the right person to trouble.” She performed a few discreet gestures and whispered something inaudible to me, and about a dozen early adolescents decloaked, becoming suddenly visible. One of the adolescent boys was holding a baby kitsune.

“How long have you all been there?” Alluria asked heatedly.

“Not all that long, but they weren’t far behind me, I’m afraid,” Kay murmured. “I apologize for the awkwardness.”

I scanned the faces of the students and noticed with some amusement that a couple of the boys seemed to give me a nod of approval. Still, it was far more uncomfortable than it was affirming. I was glad they didn’t show up five minutes later.

“Are you still rounding up children for Artemourn, then?”

“Not exactly,” Kay chuckled. She spread her arms, indicating those younglings behind her, mostly human with a smattering of elves and other races. “Things have changed. The Edge is encroaching.”

“We’ve noticed,” I muttered. “We’re planning on doing a Culling sometime soon. It’s already been coordinated with Last Stop.”

“I’m not talking about this Edge,” Kay said, her tone a bit dark for my liking. “Other Edges are drawing inward at a rate that’s frankly apocalyptic. The good news is that the wars between the warlord kings and queens have come to an abrupt end—the bad news is the reason why.”

“And that is?” Alluria pressed, her cheeks still rosy with either lingering excitement or embarrassment.

Kay turned her gaze on the kitsune. “Dozens of villages and towns have been swallowed up. They need to focus their forces on culling, but it seems the Edge cannot be contained. So instead, survivors have evacuated border territories.”

“What could be causing this?” Alluria asked with astonishment.

I shook my head. “The System is reeling. After the Great War, gods died—those gods were part of the System, much like you-know-who.” I didn’t dare say more about Beta in front of Kay and the newcomers. “With so many powerful entities gone, there’s no telling what other safeguards had failed.”

Kay nodded but narrowed her eyes as she listened.
